What's on Netflix?!?

It's that time again! I am ready to spill the beans about the new and not-so-new movies that I've taken the time to watch and write to you about.

This time around, it's not all blood and gore, see my last installment. No, this time, I made an effort to broaden my selections instead of simply turning to the zombies and life after death flicks that always seem to grab my attention first.

However, now that I think about it, I didn't completely escape the zombie apocalypse. There is one film that is all about that life and you must watch it, if you haven't already.

OK, without further delay, let's get into this month's installment of What's on Netflix...shall we!

*The following titles are in order of likeness. Number one being my TOP pick.

Nightcrawler Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Riz Ahmed Netflix Summary: A young opportunist finds success prowling the nighttime streets of LA to film disasters and death. But the darkness he captures begins to take hold.

Thoughts: First of all, this film was released in 2014. I don't know what was going on in my life that made me miss this masterpiece. The journalist in me experienced full satisfaction from beginning to end. How refreshing to witness the other side of news media, where the videographers are cut throat and unethical about getting the best flick for the top story.

This film was well-written and Jake Gyllenhaal totally embodied his character. Nightcrawler had me fully focused. This is not a film that you watch, while tending to something else. It had my whole heart and attention. At the time of writing this report, I did not research to find whether Jake received awards for this role, I sure hope that he did. This movie will forever change the way that you view your local news and breaking stories.

Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey

True Crime Documentary Netflix Summary: This docuseries examines the rise of Warren Jeffs in the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and his shocking criminal case.

Thoughts: Good golly gee! That's the first phrase that comes to mind when I think of this docuseries. This four parter will have you huffing and puffing to think that someone would have the audacity to treat others this way in the name of religion. I mean how far will people go? Apparently, as far as others will allow them. It was heartbreaking to hear the stories of abuse and manipulation, especially with young girls being wives and mothers against their will. This film is not for you if you suffer from any form of childhood trauma or religious based manipulation. It can and will trigger deep emotions. The upside is that ring leader is in jail but the downside is that this organization still exists and is still in effect. You can watch this docuseries while folding clothes or doing things around the house. It's pretty easy to follow.

Netflix Summary: Trapped students must escape their high school which has become ground zero for a zombie virus outbreak. 12 episodes

Thoughts: Strap in because this whopping 12 part episode zombie fest is going to take you for one long, thrilling ride. There's just something about a zombie film, it takes me to all of the places that I don't really want to be but can't resist. I was rooting for these high school students and really wanted them to find a way out. Some of the did and some of them did not.

After a while, it feels like the story is just dragging on for the sake of banking so many episodes but I stuck with it. The story is pretty solid and graphic. Some parts were unbelievable but that's the magic of movies, right? This series is perfect to watch with friends one episode at a time. It might be time consuming to binge watch so take small bites to truly follow the story.

1BR Starring: Nicole Brydon Bloom, Giles Matthey, Taylor Nichols

Neflix Summary: Seeking her independence, a young woman moves to Los Angeles and settles into a cozy apartment complex with a disturbing sense of community.

Thoughts: If things are not what they seem was a movie, this one is it. You may be able to relate to this story, if you've ever felt like you are alone and had no place to run. Cult like behavior and weird neighbors make you question everything when this 20 something, finally gets her own apartment in Los Angeles. This thriller had my attention from beginning to end. I just did not see what was coming next. If you have trust issues then, this movie won't help.

As you move through the story, it feels like doomsday. Toward the end, small victories begin to prevail and you realize that the main character will come out a victor and that part was so very satisfying. 1 BR is the perfect flick to have running in the background as you do other things. It does not require your focused attention. It is worth watching though.

The Paramedic Starring: Mario Casas, Déborah François, Guillermo Pfening

Netflix Summary: Unable to face his new reality in a wheelchair, Ángel develops a deadly obsession with the woman who left him and unleashes a sinister revenge plot.

Thoughts: The Paramedic is proof that whatever you meditate on will inevitably come to pass. The thing is, I was hopeful that Angel would recover and not spiral down this deep, dark tunnel of despair. He got away with so much mischief, even as a paramedic. He would swipe a keepsake from the scene of the accident and add it to some sort of shrine that he was keeping in his apartment. When I saw this, I knew that his future was fragile. You simply can't be bringing that kind of dark energy into your home and expect to thrive.

This movie is at the bottom of my list for a reason. It's not all that great. It's mediocre, if you will. I chose to stick to it simply to find out what happens to this good guy gone bad. After all that he had done, I still didn't feel that he deserved what he got in the end. If you're big on revenge, then the end will leave you feeling no less than satisfied. You can definitely watch this while power washing the exterior of your house.

Have you watched any of these movies? What did you think? Share your review with us in the comments.
